Overview

This is a unique book containing 175 photographs of excellent European graffiti portraits. The styles vary from realism to abstract. I have photographed these graffiti in cities and towns of Ireland, England, France, Belgium, Germany, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Poland, walking tirelessly on the streets during the last six years, searching for the hidden treasures on the walls of forgotten alleys and busy avenues. There are graffiti here for every age, style and taste. They are excellent works of art that are destined to disappear or to be damaged. As a matter of fact, some have already disappeared. You will find different styles and techniques, each representing the national idiosyncratic understanding of graffiti portraiture. You will contemplate portraits of women, men, national heroes, actors, singers, fantasy characters and some children. Many are really stunning and imaginative, worthy of being exhibited at art museums. I was stunned by the talent I discovered and I wanted to share it with you. The styles differ a good deal and I find richness and enjoyment in this diversity. This book intends to preserve the images for our enjoyment but also for future generations, for the art of each generation speaks volumes about its aspirations, feelings, and ideas. Look at these portraits like the traces of a culture, the European culture, and of its inhabitants of the XXI century, left for the contemplation of future generations, just as the graffiti of the city of Pompei in Rome were preserved for the future by a natural volcano disaster. I hope that you will enjoy them as much I have in discovering and photographing them like a detective of urban art.
