She spent her childhood in Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Mombasa then later moved to Malta in her teens where she met her first husband. In her early twenties, she went to Cape Town where they spent eight years and then moved to South Wales in the United Kingdom. They had two sons. Jane became a fitness instructor and ran a leisure Club for a few years before moving to the Drôme in France where they renovated an old farmhouse and started a Bed and Breakfast. Divorced from her first husband, 15 years later, Janie married Bernard.
