Becoming Dianne

Overview

What happens when you plan to become a mum one day — but one day never comes? At 49, Dianne became a solo mum through double donor IVF. After decades of waiting for the right partner or the “perfect time,” she made the bold decision to stop waiting and start living. Becoming Dianne is a raw and intimate memoir of surrendering expectations and finding unexpected joy beyond the timeline she once believed in. It’s a story ultimately of hope beyond fertility setbacks to embrace a version of motherhood she never expected – but wouldn’t change for anything.   Woven with thought-provoking journal prompts, this book is for the woman grieving what hasn’t happened.  The one silently Googling IVF at 2AM. The one afraid to want more.  Becoming Dianne is a story of what happens when you radically choose yourself, even after the world told you it was too late.

Reviews

It is an honour to write a foreword for Dianne’s book, which is truly a testament to Sir Winston Churchill’s quote of “Never, never give up” from his 1941 speech on the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Amazingly, though women in Australia were given the vote in 1902, it was not until 2008, only 17 years ago and over 100 years later, that single women like Dianne were legally able to have fertility treatment with donor gametes without a man’s involvement. As this book emphasises, and research following donor-conceived children from birth to adulthood has shown, it is love and truth that matter most to children born through third-party origins, i.e. donor origins. The presence of a father, or two parents, or any genetic connection is not essential for children to thrive. The quality of the family relationships and support of the surrounding community is what matters. So, Dianne’s book showing the love, caring and support of those around her through her fertility journey should be an encouragement to other women wishing to follow her path. I hope this book inspires you. Dr Anne Clark MPS, MBChB, RCOG, RANZCOG, CREI, APP Founder and Medical Director of Fertility First
