Bear Hugs: A Book About Consent was written for the children who may not want to be hugged, and for the parents, grandparents, and friends who may need a gentle reminder in how best to approach them. It's the sweet, playfully illustrated story of Banks, an exceptionally soft, fuzzy bear that isn't always a fan of physical touch. While other creatures in the forest may read her hesitancy as shy or standoffish, Banks teaches them that she enjoys greeting others in various ways. Ultimately, the most important lesson that Banks teaches her friends is to ask for permission before hugging her.

Author Information

Anne Marie Brown is a lyrical poet, children's book author, and experiential travel expert. She has previously written three children's books, Foxy Moxy, Hazel's First Winter, and Goodnight, Little Owlet with Bear Hugs being her fourth. She wrote Bear Hugs for all children who may express love in other ways than hugs. She has also been the ghostwriter for over twenty children's books for other authors.Anne Marie who lives in Denver, Colorado with her family, in her spare time loves writing little poetic snacks for her Instagram account, BrunchPoet. Melanie Darling has always enjoyed drawing and in the 6th grade, she declared that was her calling in life. Many years, four kids and a lot of fur babies later, she still finds illustration as one of her favorite ways to chill and her favorite form of therapy. Her first illustrated book was The Love Lottery, followed by Panda, my Bear, and Through the Rain. She wasa featured artist in The Giving World, and also in the artist collaboration book, The Animal World. Bear Hugs was one of her favorite books to illustrate as she had the freedom to give her own creative design to each animal character. When she isn't working full time, you'll find her spending time with her kids and her amazing partner in Aurora, Colorado. And just so you know, if you ever met her, she is always up for a BIG hug!
