OverviewEmotions, passion and a truly 'special' atmosphere. This is what sports fans experience when they watch their favourite team play live at the stadium. 'Satellite' fans are excluded from this experience; they live a long way from their favourite club and rely on the media for access. Yet media broadcasts have their limitations, and the potential of international fans remains untapped. Attending a match at the stadium, as the most significant fan experience, is accessible to only a fraction of the fanbase of top international clubs. This paper provides impetus for development and emotional engagement on the part of the sports media, with a view to achieving media-economic effects by involving satellite fans. These approaches will subsequently be examined for their legal implementation within the framework of sports law.
