OverviewWhen engaging with crime literature, one is usually dealing with crime fiction(s), with literary crimes that, although they may have connections to 'actual reality' and thus to real criminality, are ultimately always perceived as something fictional. In this context crime literature has repeatedly drawn on real crimes, either telling stories against the backdrop of real criminal events, or documenting the same real events in a journalistic manner. A similar yet distinct relationship between criminal reality and criminal fictionality can also be found in other media fields that focus on crime, investigation, and punishment, such as film or television. The contributions in this anthology address the problem of crime narrated (in film, media, or literature) and crime experienced (in political and societal contexts), in order to explore the question of whether or not there are synergies between them.
