All the Feels: How to Stay Human in the Digital World

Overview

""Finally, the research-driven guide for navigating the digital world we've been waiting for! ...Nuanced, compassionate, and clearly written"" (Ethan Kross), this is a revelatory exploration of how our online lives can enrich human connections rather than destroy them, to help us all stay sane without staying offline. While it's great to go outside and touch grass, the reality is that we spend most of life with our screens, whether for school, work, or socializing. Luckily, a growing body of research shows that the variety of ever-more tailored ways that the internet allows us to connect with people has actually improved our ability to name and communicate our feelings. That, in turn, expands our emotional range and benefits our mental health. In All the Feels, tech and emotional design researcher Pamela Pavliscak reveals for the first time how being so plugged in shapes our emotions. Surprisingly, studies shows that digital detoxes have little effect on happiness. Instead, how we engage with the internet (rather than how much) profoundly shapes our lives. Even simple habits like sending emojis to our friends to signal nuance, or making a few positive digital connections every day, can meaningfully support emotional well-being. Pavliscak shows readers how we can open our phones and rather than anxiety-spiral, foster all the good feels.

Reviews

""Finally, the research-driven guide for navigating the digital world we've been waiting for! Digital technology has revolutionized how we interact, often directly impacting our emotional lives. Yet, until now, we still lacked a roadmap for navigating these spaces effectively. All the Feels provides that guide. Nuanced, compassionate, and clearly written, this is a deeply humane book that we can all benefit from."" --Ethan Kross, international bestselling author of Chatter and Shift ""In this bold and fascinating exploration of our digital emotional lives, Pavliscak provides actionable, science-based advice for keeping our sanity and humanity."" --Dr. Kate Darling, author of The New Breed ""Warm, witty and deeply researched, All the Feels is a brilliant field-guide for all of us trying to make sense of the weird and even wonderful ways our love of technology is transforming our emotional lives. I urge you to read it!"" --Tiffany Watt Smith, author of The Book of Human Emotions ""Based on intimate research with thousands of people, All the Feels is a compelling, nuanced, and hopeful exploration of a topic often flattened into moralism and cautionary tales.""--Anya Kamenetz, author of The Art of Screen Time and Falling in Love With the World Again

""The book I didn't know I needed until I was 50 pages in and texting my friends about it incessantly. The argument: it's not how much time you spend online that shapes your emotional life--it's how you engage. Digital detoxes, she argues, are basically yo-yo dieting for your nervous system....What actually works is more interesting and way more achievable. A must-read for anyone who has ever felt vaguely terrible after scrolling but can't quite explain why."" --Isabelle Eyman, Camille Styles ""A fascinating look under look under the hood at experience design and internet life from an extremely online perspective.""--Kirkus Reviews ""Pavliscak writes with measured alacrity for finding the positives as well as offering advice on how to navigate the negatives. Parents raising digital natives will be especially encouraged by Pavliscak's findings as they themselves work throughtheir own smartphone reliance. Readers interested in the effects of our increased reliance on digital spaces will find food for thought here.""--Booklist, *STARRED REVIEW* ""Finally, the research-driven guide for navigating the digital world we've been waiting for!
