OverviewSeven-year-old Curtis lived with his family in a rustic log cabin beneath the towering Grand Tetons of Wyoming during the hard times of the 1930s. Life was simple and difficult. There was no electricity, telephone, television, or modern conveniences. By lantern light, his family read scriptures and prayed together every day. One morning, Curtis's older brothers announced they were going fishing. He desperately wanted to go, but they told him he couldn't because he had no fishing pole. Curtis silently prayed and then asked his father if he could come too. Seeing his son's excitement, his father decided to take a day off and make two fishing poles from long willow branches. Together they dug worms and walked to a quiet pool along the stream. While the older boys laughed at their homemade poles, Curtis and his father patiently fished in the tall grass. To everyone's surprise, they caught one big trout after another. By day's end, Curtis and his father had caught twenty-two large fish, while the others caught only six small ones. Curtis proudly carried the fish home, grateful for a wonderful day and the answer to his heartfelt prayer.
