A Safe Place: How to Prevent the Next School Shooting

Overview

A Safe Place: How to Prevent the Next School Shooting by Luis D. Aponte is a groundbreaking and deeply personal exploration of one of America's most urgent crises: school gun violence. Drawing from seven years of meticulous research into 1,204 U.S. school shootings spanning three decades, Aponte-a librarian, veteran, and survivor of gun violence-offers a fact-based, nonpartisan roadmap to protect children and educators. This book goes beyond headlines, uncovering the overlooked patterns and root causes of school shootings. Aponte debunks common myths, revealing that arguments, feuds, and unresolved conflicts-not mental illness or video games-are the leading triggers of these tragedies. He advocates for teaching emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and gun safety to children as essential tools for prevention. Packed with actionable solutions, A Safe Place outlines practical measures that communities can implement without waiting for Congress. From consistent use of metal detectors and armed resource officers to panic button systems like Alyssa's Law, Aponte emphasizes strategies that save lives. He also highlights the importance of community-based programs, such as Stand for the Silent and Community Violence Intervention initiatives, which foster safer schools and neighborhoods. Through compelling narratives, Aponte honors the resilience of parents like Lori Alhadeff and Kirk Smalley, who turned personal tragedies into powerful movements for change. He also shares his own harrowing experiences with gun violence, adding a deeply human perspective to his research. This book is not just a guide-it's a heartfelt plea for unity and action. Aponte challenges readers to join the fight against school gun violence, reminding us that every child deserves to grow up in peace. A Safe Place is a vital resource for parents, educators, and community leaders committed to creating safe havens for learning and growth.

Reviews

""Gun violence is the scourge of our society and the leading cause of death for our young people. With A Safe Place Luis has brought forward research and data to build a compelling case for how we can do more to bring safety back to our schools, and sanity back to our country. As relevant for parents and teachers as it is for lawmakers, A Safe Place is a resource the gun violence prevention movement will be relying on for years until we end this epidemic."" - Virginia State Senator Saddam Azlan Salim ""A Safe Place by Luis D. Aponte is a powerful call to prioritize prevention, safety, and compassion in our schools. It offers solutions that empower communities to act and is a must-read for anyone who believes every child deserves to learn with peace of mind and go home with dreams for tomorrow."" - Lori Alhadeff, CEO of Make Our Schools Safe ""I know first-hand the effects that bullying can and does have on our children and families, having lost my eleven-year-old son to suicide due to it. With all of my heart I hope that this book will help prevent it from happening to another child and family. Having people like Luis dedicate their time, effort and even lives to help prevent another tragedy gives me hope for our world's kids."" - Kirk Smalley, President & Co-founder of Stand for the Silent As a survivor myself of a tragic school shooting, losing my 14-year-old granddaughter, Alyssa Alhadeff, in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School shooting in 2018, I relate to Aponte's journey of hardships, trauma, and recovery. He describes how he found hope and purpose despite the pain of his past and how he built a ""safe place"" within himself and through his faith... Readers of all backgrounds can find inspiration to confront their past and focus on hope and redemption. Aponte acknowledges that healing is not instant and it involves patience, forgiveness, and especially self-love. - Terri Robinovitz, coauthor of Live, Love, Play for 8: Alyssa's Legacy in Soccer A Safe Place is a compelling, data-rich call to action aimed at stakeholders who don't want to wait for legislative reform to begin making a difference. It's particularly valuable for educators, parents, and local leaders who seek grounded, evidence-informed strategies at the school or neighborhood level. Its strength lies in mobilizing awareness and offering concrete starting points. - Brian Qualters, Lieutenant, Emergency Management Division, Palm Beach County School District Police Department

Author Information

Luis D. Aponte is a librarian, U.S. Air Force veteran, and the author of four books and eBooks on school shootings: A Safe Place: How to Prevent the Next School Shooting and The Ultimate U.S. School Shooting Reference Guide, Volumes 1-3. His work has been published in Virginia's Mt. Vernon Gazette and Fairfax Connection newspapers and the peer-reviewed EDUCATION journal. Luis resides in Virginia, where he enjoys ""forest bathing"" in national parks with his wife, making films, and spoiling their adopted orange tabby cat, Ellie. In 1992-1993, Luis attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, but dropped out during his junior year due to the threat of gun violence on campus. Approximately 25 years later, the same school experienced one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. Since then, Luis has dedicated his research skills as a librarian to finding patterns in 1,204 U.S. school shooting incidents over 30 years, aiming to help save children's lives. Originally from Savannah, Georgia, Luis earned his master's degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida, his bachelor's degree in Communications - Film & Video from Florida Atlantic University, and his associate's degree in Computer Science from Broward College in Florida, all with honors. He was also a member and the historian for his local chapters of the Golden Key International Honour Society and Phi Theta Kappa International College Honor Society. Luis hopes his books on school shootings will help bring communities together to save lives. Children and educators deserve to feel safe in schools without the threat of gun violence.
