Overview

The Latvian Gambit (also known as the Greco Counter Gambit), 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5, is an unusual opening for Black, analyzed and popularized by Latvian players in the 1800s. The opening goes back to the 16th and 17th century, making it one of the oldest openings in chess. This opening for Black will appeal to those chess players who wish to avoid over-analyzed and more common positions. It also has a surprise element with many traps for both sides. The opening has been tested in correspondence chess by masters, and played successfully in blitz chess. Here is a collection of 500 annotated decisive chess games arising from 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5. In some of the more critical positions of interesting games, chess diagrams have been added. This collection of Latvian Gambit games is aimed at players who like unusual openings. The opening has a strong surprise value and both players should be prepared for a good tactical game. Enjoy!
