Overview

A Bridge to U.S. High School Environmental Science is an introduction to environmental science written specifically for Chinese students entering American high schools. It addresses a concrete problem: Chinese high schools do not teach environmental science as a subject at all. Fragments of it exist - atmospheric circulation and the water cycle appear in geography, ecosystems and food chains in biology, the chemistry of acid rain in chemistry - but those fragments sit in four or five separate courses, are never connected, and are never taught as a discipline with its own way of thinking. So when a Chinese student walks into an American Environmental Science classroom for the first time, the difficulty is not ""I know this but can't say it in English."" It is that the subject was never systematically learned in the first place. This book is built for that gap. The book covers nine units: ecosystems, biodiversity, populations, Earth systems and resources, land and water use, energy resources and consumption, atmospheric pollution, aquatic and terrestrial pollution, and global change. Every chapter assumes zero background - it defines before it explains, explains the mechanism before it applies it, and ends in calculations and English expression. Three features are designed specifically for the transition. A bilingual terminology bridge gives the English phrasing for every key term, so students can follow the lecture and speak up in it. Standalone U.S.-context sections explain the background an American classroom simply assumes you know - the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, Superfund, the Dust Bowl, the Montreal Protocol. And every calculation is worked out in full: the reasoning, each step, the units, and a self-check.
