25 Solos for Mandolin 1899-1932 Vol. 2: The Italian Style of the Golden Era

Overview

The music presented in this second volume, compiled and republished in a modern edition, represents a new selection of original works for solo mandolin from the so-called golden age of the instrument. It is drawn from periodicals now out of print and from several contemporary publications that, as far as we know, were never reissued. The collection includes both concert music and dance pieces in the Italian style of the pre-Second World War era and belongs to the so-called ""Golden Age"" of the mandolin, around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Among the pieces collected here, the compositions of the mandolinist and composer Raffaele Calace (1863-1934) stand out-author of the poetic Notturno, subtitled ""Cielo stellato""(Starry sky)-as well as Silvio Ranieri's (1882-1956) Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Giuseppe Pettine's (1875-1966) Barcarola. Following these are the brilliant mazurka by Alfred H. Loreti (1870-1944), the polkas by Enrico Marucelli (1873-1901) and Salvatore Agostini (1876-1934), the mazurkas of Francesco Tentarelli (c.1874-1904), and the march by Angelo Figliolini (1878-1955). The remaining composers are today largely unknown, but they are included here as evidence of the diversity of voices of the period. It is hoped that enthusiasts of modern plucked instruments will also find the rest of the collection enjoyable. Each piece has been carefully examined, often corrected for various imperfections, and transcribed for modern use, while preserving historical authenticity in every detail: slurs, fingerings, performance markings, effects, dedications, and all other characteristics typical of the era. Intended for performers, teachers, and scholars, this volume enables the rediscovery of long-neglected gems from the repertoire for mandolin and guitar.
