2084 - The Obesity Farms

Overview

A dystopian novel that deals with a government taking advantage of its citizens, rather than helping them. When Sean Duncan is arrested by the Obesity police and sent to Central Iowa Farm jail for non-payment of his fat tax he finds his father's library at the Farm Welcome center. This sets him on a mission to discover what really happened to his father who was a US senator and a presidential candidate. Sean buddies up with a jail mate who helps him escape and joins in his quest. They locate the woman who ratted him out to the police. When Sean and his new friend Baxter find Eden, she is mourning her deceased parents who died at their Farm apartment and are due to have their funeral the following day. She learns that Farm funerals aren't what they seem.In an effort to gain favor with the Farm director, Sean agrees to do promotional ads for the New American Farms. He hopes this new position will get him closer to the information he needs to discover his father's fate. Meanwhile Baxter finds love with Rosetta, a Farm hospital nurse. The four new friends set out to get Sean elected president, a president who would abolish the Farms.

Reviews

I also liked the unique usage of particular names and phrases like Eden Sprayberry, ""Rexics"" and ""Obies,"" and just in general the way the world is structured with Obesity Police, Fat Taxes, and Obesity Farms. This book is a creatively written study of society's trajectory if the wrong policies continue to be put forth and the health of Americans and the environment are sacrificed. If you enjoy satirical political commentaries with a dash of humor and disgust, then you will enjoy this story crafted by Edd Tury. ""2084: The Obesity Farms"" will draw out all the emotions you could ask for, pity, disgust, laughter, and hope. Reviewed by Chelsy Scherba for Reader Views Leap out of the current status of American politics and open the pages of this book for a tour into an interesting near-future scenario that will alternatively make you think about eating your next dish of ice cream and wonder how to escape a society that has turned on its head. Tury created likeable characters who navigate the realities of bio-fuel, incarceration (and the quasi-incarceration that is felt when working to escape the system), the intricacies of political leadership where integrity used to be present and has morphed, by twists and turns, into something much less 'integral.' Despite the suppression that is happening now, Tury describes a future of diverse humans who still fall in love, who still maintain quality friendships, who care for one another, who observe and discern what's occurring and how it's affecting their own realities, and who aren't afraid to take matters into their own hands and assert control over their individuality. A good and thought-provoking read... What a great read with an epic idea of what could lie ahead. Well written and executed beautifully. Hard to put it down!
