OverviewMajor sporting events are becoming increasingly important for their host cities. Scientific studies are focusing on the potential impact on a destination, particularly in light of the current debate on sustainability. Garmisch-Partenkirchen has a long tradition of hosting events. Sporting competitions in particular, such as the New Year's Ski Jumping Tournament, shape the market town's image as a winter sports destination. The award of the 2011 Ski World Championships triggered a series of construction measures, primarily involving the modernisation of the existing ski areas on the Gudiberg, Hausberg and Kreuzeck mountains and the transport infrastructure. This paper deals with the ecological and socio-economic impacts of the 2011 Ski World Championships in an ex-ante analysis. Following a theoretical introduction to mega sporting events, the various impacts on the region, including construction measures, deforestation and artificial snowmaking, are examined. In addition, the impacts on soil, vegetation and wildlife, as well as the economic effects and possible long-term tourism effects of the World Ski Championships, are examined.
