GHOST

May Book of the Month

Ghost Cities

By Siang Lu

Considering the types of books I normally read, I didn’t quite expect Siang Lu to become possibly my favourite Australian author. Instead, every time I pick up one of his books I want to go to Lemon Grove and absolutely gorge myself on pan fried buns, and Ghost Cities was no exception.

Blending satire and over the top characters while discussing the irritations and imperfections of the English language, dropping easter eggs and clues throughout the entire book, and deftly dealing with race and our concept of belonging while inserting puns about steam buns, Ghost Cities is a book that will make you consider our concept of politics and what we expect from our leaders while also making you snort laugh. - Lexie

LOVE HIM

April ILF Book of the Month

Because I Love Him
By Ashlee Donohue

As a regular on ABC’s The Drum, NITV, and SBS, Ashlee Donohue may be a familiar name to you. At last, her memoir has arrived. Ashlee is known as an advocate in arenas like the United Nations, Mudgin-Gal Aboriginal Women’s Centre, and the Domestic Violence New South Wales Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Steering Committee.

This book covers themes that have shaped Ashlee’s contribution to public life, but from an intimate, raw, first person perspective. She explores her experiences with family, motherhood, love and violence, with a sharp eye towards the impacts of racism and colonialism. A timely and moving story told with compassion and sensitivity that will leave a lasting impression on you whether you know a lot about these topics or very little. Essential reading for fans of Veronica Gorrie, Jess Hill, or Amy Thunig. - Jimmy

May Kids Book of the Month
Listen Hippo
By Gabriel Evansan

Hippo just wants to make his friend Billy happy and he thinks he knows just what to do! Playing dress-up? Dancing? Pirate adventures? Maybe Hippo should listen to what Billy has to say first… Listen, Hippo! is all about learning the importance of listening and that we don’t always know what’s best to help people until they tell us themselves. A fun, humorous and important story. - Ruby
