For nearly two decades Better Read Than Dead bookshop has thrived in the heart of Newtown's King Street, which houses a vibrant community and offers one of the most eclectic shopping experiences in Sydney. Our shop is a literary landmark that nourishes the neighbourhood's intellectual dynamics with a specially curated collection of books and regular author and community events.
Better Read Than Dead's impressive contemporary space, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and sky-lit mezzanine level create an inviting respite from the busy street and we welcome browsers, advice-seekers and anyone who values a good old-fashioned book chat. We pride ourselves on the quality and specialised knowledge of our booksellers. Our staff's collective decades of bookselling experience, diverse tastes and deep love of reading means that we are able to provide our customers with individualised service and a unique range of titles.
Lonely Planet has acknowledged our commitment to readers, writers and the local community by naming us there "favourite Sydney Bookshop." Pop by the store next time you're in Newtown and find out why.
Amelia 2.0 and Better Read Kids
Amelia is our specialist children's buyer and has already achieved a cult-like following among a local tribe of wide-eyed under-fives for her exhaustive knowledge of picture books. Her savvy staff picks span the whole range right up to Young Adult fiction. Check out our range of children's books, curated by Amelia, on our Better Read Kids website.
She's always happy to assist schools and librarians with recommendations, and will do just about anything to get out of the store and visit your school. Amelia can organise author visits, set up account facilities upon request and set up a rewards scheme so that when parents of the school shop at BRTD, the school library will earn credit to spend on books. Give Amelia a call or email her at email@example.com to enquire how a BRTD school account can benefit your school.
The Better Reader Book Club meets monthly upstairs at Better Read Than Dead bookshop.
Each month one of our voracious booksellers will pick a book and host the discussion. The meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm, with the exception of our inaugural meeting which is on Sunday the 13th of April at 6 pm.
We offer a 10% discount to interested book clubbers purchasing the selected book leading up to each month's meeting, and of course there will be wine and nibbles for our Better Readers!
All are welcome. Simply email Kate at firstname.lastname@example.org or join the Better Reader Book Club Facebook group here for regular updates.
