'this exquisite art book of peter brew-bevan's portrait photography is as much about how he arrived at the final result of these stunning studio portraits as it is about the finished works. it is all about getting on camera the subtext of the sitter.' barry otto
shoot: studio sessions presents over 40 celebrity portraits by internationally acclaimed australian photographer peter brew-bevan - together with the stories of their creation, as concepted and recorded in brew-bevan's personal working journals.shoot is more than a collection of timelessly beautiful, covetable images reproduced and designed to a quality that makes this publication an artwork in itself. by including facsimile journal pages for each major portrait, this remarkable, many-layered book opens a window onto the technical, creative and emotional processes behind a master portrait photographer's work. shoot reveals the logistics of lighting, propping, set-up, makeup and styling; the limitations and frustrations of access time; and the critical need for communication and collaboration between photographer and subject. all of which must be skilfully and sensitively drawn together to produce finished images of seemingly effortless beauty.
born in adelaide, south australia, in 1969, peter brew-bevan trained as an artist, specialising in painting and drawing. while still at art school he began to experiment with photography, and was so compelled by the instant beauty achievable through this medium that he set aside his painting career. he now uses his artist's eye through the camera lens. peter works with various photographic forms including photomontage, but it is for his portraiture that he is best known, in particular for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through the creative use of lighting and location, coupled with his ability to engage and communicate with his subjects. peter travels the world working on commissions for clients ranging from magazines and record companies to film studios. in recent years he has returned to landscape painting, and has also directed music videos. his images have been collected and exhibited by australia's national portrait gallery in canberra.
