WRITING COMPETITION

At Better Read Than Dead, we love all things literary. As such, we strongly support and encourage writing at all levels. Our kids writing competitions have been running for years, and we thought it was about time we let the adults in on the fun! If you've ever wanted to write but have perhaps not had the right opening, this is your chance. It's also a great opportunity to have your work reach a wider audience, as all entries will be published on our website. In addition, the best 30 stories will be collated into an anthology by Better Read Publishing.

We believe it's very important to give first-time authors the exposure they deserve; and to that end, we have enlisted author, Patti Miller, to be patron of the event. Patti has written eight books as well as numerous articles and essays published in national newspapers and literary magazines. She has taught literature and writing at UTS and UWS and the Faber Academy, and currently leads memoir writing workshops at the Australian Writers' Centre - one of the world's leading providers of online and classroom courses for aspiring writers.

Patti will head the judging panel of the competition, along with Better Read Than Dead staff, and the lucky winner will receive a writing course (valued at $500) at the Australian Writers' Centre! The course - Creative Writing Stage 1 - is ideal for boosting one's creativity and learning the art of constructing compelling fiction. During this informative series of workshops, you will explore ways to find your unique voice and acquire the powerful techniques required to become a more engaging writer.

Competition details are as follows:

"In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer."

- Albert Camus

Using the above as inspiration, write a short story of between 1000-1500 words centred around the theme of winter in Sydney.

Please submit your stories to submissions@betterread.com.au by 23 September with a short bio about yourself, including your inspiration/aspiration for writing. Please make sure you have also filled out the expression of interest and consent form below.

Better Read Than Dead has always been an ardent supporter of debut authors, and as such we wish to further the creative potential of new and upcoming writers - not only through exposure on our website and in our published anthology, but also through our partnership with the Australian Writers' Centre. The competition prize of a Creative Writing Workshop would provide you with the opportunity to further finesse your writing skills and confidence.

Best of luck to all participants!
