OverviewIn his extremely rhetorically adept letters, the Doctor of the Church Jerome addresses a deep inner conflict between Virgil and the Gospels, between Cicero and the apostles. This volume traces these cultural transformation processes using Jerome's strategy of intertextuality. The research interest is divided into a methodological and a content-related part. On the one hand, digital methods of citation analysis are (further) developed and evaluated. Using computer-aided methods, the number of quotations of the Aeneid will be significantly increased by more than a third and at the same time the theoretical concept of quotation will be significantly sharpened. On the other hand, hermeneutic methods are used to create a typology of quotations, which not only reveals the 'limits' of text interpretation, but also draws a more differentiated picture of Jerome's citation technique. The work reveals a linguistic-stylistic hybridisation that enables a modified and deeper insight into the actual, subterranean adaptations of the classical-pagan literary heritage by the early Christian author.
