OverviewThe Palestine department of the Greifswald Gustaf Dalman Institute includes, among other things, a library of precious Hebrew prints from the 16th to the 18th century. About 20 of them contain extensive censors' comments mainly of Northern Italian origin. Based on this material, the present work analyses the phenomenon of Papal censorship of Jewish books with regard to the procedures, the censors, their criteria, guiding principles, and methods. This leads to the question of the perception of Judaism that expresses itself in this process. What topics are controversial? What is the significance of censorship for the textual tradition? How could we describe the Christian-Jewish relationship as it is reflected in such discourses? Control of knowledge and control of transfer appear to be two sides of the same coin. The range of this thorough study reaches far beyond the collection of the Greifswald library.
