Overview

An urgent, timely and unforgettable true story of the horrors of post-Katrina New Orleans In August, 2005, as Hurricane Katrina blew in, the city of New Orleans had been abandoned by most citizens. But resident Abdulrahman Zeitoun, though his wife and family had gone, refused to leave. For days he traversed an apocalyptic landscape of flooded streets by canoe. He protected neighbours' properties, fed trapped dogs and rescued survivors. But eventually he came to the attention of those 'guarding' this drowned city. Only then did Zeitoun's nightmare really begin. Zeitoun is the powerful, ultimately uplifting true story of one man's courage when confronted with an awesome force of nature followed by more troubling human oppression.

Eggers uses Zeitoun's eyes to report on America's reasonless post-Katrina world. Reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's documentaries, this is a true story told with the skills of a master of fiction. Immensely readable Independent Masterly. Brilliantly crafted, powerfully written and deftly reported Guardian The shocking tale of a true New Orleans hero. This is narrative non-fiction at its very, very best Herald Shocking The Times Extraordinary, gripping Daily Telegraph Terrifying Observer Riveting Vanity Fair

Kate writes: Zeitoun is a moving and eye-opening journalistic account of a much-loved and respected Syrian-born small business owner and resident of New Orleans in the days before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina. Eggers worked closely with Abdulrahman Zeitoun (known simply as "Zeitoun") and his wife Kathy to faithfully represent Zeitoun's experiences when he remained in New Orleans to supervise his residential properties and business sites following the hurricane. Eggers explores faith and optimism of ordinary people, US politics and the human service response to tragedy. This is Eggers at his best - the type of writer who can weave real events and social injustices into compelling personal narratives that keep you up all night reading and encourage further interest in the subject matter.
