Ioan Hughes ************************ How many of us can remember those boring afternoons in the classroom when the voice of the Geography teacher seemed to be no more than a monotonous groan as he failed to deliver any information of interest? I must admit that I feared a similar lesson as I ventured to read Snowdon Elin Meeks addition to the Wonder of Wales series. Could this be another lecture on rock formation and the effects of volcanic eruptions? Thankfully, my fears were totally unfounded, and the author has successfully taken us to the summit of Snowdon with all possible stumbling blocks being carefully avoided. In the bilingual volume, we have no more than 31 pages, with many of these being occupied by dramatic colourful pictures. But the amount of information presented is outstanding, and Elin Meek should be congratulated on the way she has successfully stepped from one topic to another without a single stumble. Many of the readers will possibly know that Snowdon is 3,560 feet high, but I, for one, was unaware of the fact that the name comes from the Saxon Snow Dun, which means snow hill. Information of this nature and the simple way in which it is presented, will encourage young and old to read on. During the journey, we are introduced to legends which are linked to Snowdon, and with the lakes demanding some attention, geological history gets an inevitable mention. We are told that by the middle of the 1990s around 350,000 walkers aimed for the summit of Snowdon annually, welcoming a break in the caf, which was rapidly deteriorating and described by Prince Charles as the highest slum in Wales. All this emphasises the popularity of Snowdon, and many will undoubtedly benefit from the information presented by Elin Meek on the various footpaths which wind their way to the summit. Work is also well underway on developing a new summit visitor centre due to be opened by spring 2008. This scheme will probably boost the mountains popularity even further. And in referring to the mountains landscape, the author urges everyone to respect and look after Snowdon a plea which possibly emphasises the love she personally has for the mountain.
