Overview

There are many unsung heroes among jazz musicians. This book profiles six of them who have served as performers, recording artists, bandleaders, and educators. They have faced challenges that include racial tension, gender bias, personal setbacks, the demands of studio work, and the grind of touring. They also have derived great satisfaction from pursuing their passion, and have worked overtime to pass along their knowledge and experience so that new generations can do the same. Their body of work and their mentoring have enriched many lives; now their stories can inspire even more. The musicians profiled here include the first director of the U.S. Navy Commodores, Marshall Hawkins; trumpeter Marvin Stamm; flutist Holly Hofmann; woodwind artist and educator Joe Eckert; trumpeter and educator Gary Langford; and brass performer, educator, and horn tester Jim Anastasi. All were interviewed for the book except for Mr. Anastasi, who passed away in 2021. The final chapter addresses the potential future of jazz in the U.S. music market as jazz education programs grow and thrive throughout the country.
