OverviewNothing prepares you for the changes that happen to your parents as they get older... but you can make sure you're prepared to handle them. You want your parents to maintain their independence and quality of life for as long as possible, and there's a lot to think about that you may have no experience with. Aging changes your parents-and it changes your life, too. It can feel like everything becomes your responsibility at once: the calls, the paperwork, the decisions, the family tension, the worry. You may be doing your best and still feel unprepared. One day, it's a hospital call. Other times it's a gradual buildup: missed bills, repeated stories, new falls, or a home that no longer feels safe. This is a practical, supportive guide that turns overwhelm into action. It breaks caregiving into clear steps so you can make informed decisions without trying to do everything at once. And it's written by someone with relatable experience who understands these challenges firsthand. Inside, you'll find: A First 72 Hours crisis plan for hospital stays, discharges, and urgent decisions Red flags to watch for (health, safety, memory, finances) and what to do next How to build a workable care team and coordinate family roles Scripts for hard conversations about driving, finances, safety, and relocation Guidance on key legal documents (POA, advance directives, organizing records) Practical help with finances, care costs, insurance, and benefits (Medicare, Medicaid basics, VA resources) A system to stay organized: caregiver binder, checklists, and digital tools Information about housing options, changes, downsizing, and moving Support for your parents' dignity and well-being Tools for caregiving in complex families and diverse cultures Advice for taking care of yourself and handling burnout, guilt, and grief Guidance for legacy and end-of-life planning (including hospice/palliative care) And much more. You don't have to do this perfectly. You just need a clear next step-and this book helps you take it with more confidence. What a thorough book to handle a multitude of issues when it comes to elder patient care. I love the scripts it gives to help in emotional scenarios and times when preciseness is needed. The author has a winner here. I wish this book would have been published when my folks were around. Both had medical issues and I was forced to step up and help them survive the best a teenager could do. I think that every parent should get this book for their children to read in case the time comes around that the children are called slip on to help their parents. Excellent read and very knowledge filled. I believe it will be and easy read for them to help them understand what they will need to expect if or when their parent or parents need their assistance. This is a easy to read resource on a stage of life so many of us are facing and will face. It covers a lot of topics, some obvious but those not as much. It offers lots of tips and scripts on how to be the best advocate for your aging parent, or any aging adult you might be taking care of as they progress into the later stages of life. It isn't always an easy emotional read, as you learn all the difficult tasks you may have to face and that can be hard to understand as you come to terms with your aging parents. But the practical feedback is very valuable. Highly recommend this book. It breaks down the caregiver into steps.
