The two-volume life by US professor Fraser is certainly one of the best. Written without professorial introversion, it musters all the known facts intelligently, and makes equally intelligent speculations about the gaps in our knowledge. It is intelligible and readable on the contemporary scene - politics, social life, the theatre - and it is fair to say that anyone who reads it with attention will probably know all he or she may need to know on the subject.
