You Don't Know Sh*t About Leadership: And Neither Do I

Overview

Most leadership books hand you slogans, recycled stories, and frameworks that fall apart the moment real pressure hits. This isn't one of those books. You Don't Know Sh*t About Leadership is a straight-talking field guide for leaders who are tired of theory and want the truth. Scott McCarthy pulls back the curtain on two decades of leading soldiers, mentoring young officers, commanding complex organizations, and helping managers across every industry break out of the habits that quietly destroy team performance. This book isn't about pretending to have all the answers. It's about owning the fact that leadership is messy, human, unpredictable - and that you grow by stepping into the hard lessons most people avoid. Inside, you'll learn how to: Build a team they don't want to leave by creating clarity, trust, and discipline Communicate so your people actually listen, engage, and act Make decisions under pressure without second-guessing yourself Stop being the bottleneck and start empowering people to lead beside you Recognize when you are the problem - and how to fix it Lead yourself with the level of discipline and honesty your team deserves Through raw stories, practical tools, and leadership insights sharpened in real-world chaos, McCarthy shows you what leadership really looks like when the stakes are high and the excuses run out. You'll walk away with a clearer understanding of yourself, your team, and the kind of leader you're becoming - one tough lesson at a time. If you're ready to ditch the ego, cut the noise, and lead with purpose, this book will challenge you, push you, and give you the tools to become the leader your team actually wants to follow. Leadership isn't a destination. It's a lifelong pursuit. And none of us know sh*t - not fully. But after reading this book, you'll know a hell of a lot more than most.

Reviews

""People often view leadership as automatic or genetic. Neither is true. Real leadership demands hard, honest work. This book is a thought-provoking and practical read for leaders committed to mastering their craft, whether early in their career or well seasoned. Drawing on industry examples and the author's own experience, McCarthy challenges readers to examine themselves and grow. Despite the humble title, Scott McCarthy knows leadership. He has lived it, studied it, and distilled it into a valuable and refreshing guide for leaders who want to get better."" Colonel (Retired) John ConradAuthor, Public Servant Executive ""A sharp, honest, and necessary book that strips leadership back to its essentials. It challenges ego, demands character, and speaks from real experience. Every serious leader will benefit from its clarity and conviction."" Dr. Bryan Brulotte, MStJ, GCJ, CS Chairman, Sterling-Trust This book isn't built on theory. It's built on conversations, failures, pressure, and real leadership moments. These leaders have lived it too. ""Finally, a leadership book that says what most won't, that you'll never have it all figured out, and that's exactly where real leadership begins. Scott's approach to leading yourself, your team, and your organisation is as practical as it is honest."" Colin D Ellis Bestselling Author and Global Workplace Culture Expert ""Scott's book drew me in, had me speed-reading forward, then pulling out a notebook and going back to write things down. Intellectually stimulating and bluntly frank, it makes powerful connections and offers practical insight that benefits leaders at every level."" This book is for anyone on the quest to unlock what is possible in leadership."" Heather R. Younger, J.D., CSP Keynote Speaker, Author, and ConsultantThis book refuses to romanticize leadership. It treats trust as dependability and follow-through, not warmth, and names power as real, consequential, and unavoidable. Author Information

Scott McCarthy is a senior officer in the Canadian Armed Forces and the Chief Leadership Officer of Moving Forward Leadership. He has spent more than two decades leading soldiers, executives, and organizations through pressure, change, and uncertainty. The lessons that shaped Scott's approach to leadership didn't come from rank or position. They were formed over years of learning alongside exceptional leaders, both in uniform and in the corporate world, and through ongoing exposure to executive coaches and leadership thinkers who challenged his assumptions. Just as importantly, they were shaped by hard-earned experience, reflection, and the willingness to confront his own blind spots along the way.Scott's work focuses on helping leaders stop pretending they have it all figured out and start doing the harder, more honest work of leading themselves first. He believes leadership is not about confidence, charisma, or control, but about discipline, clarity, and the willingness to look inward before expecting more from others. His approach is grounded in mentorship and development. Scott is less interested in creating followers than in helping people recognize their own capacity to lead, regardless of title or experience.Scott lives in Canada with his family and continues to serve while working with leaders who are willing to question assumptions, own their imperfections, and grow into the responsibility leadership demands.
