Yevgeny Bagrationovich Vakhtangov (also spelled Evgeny or Eugene) (13 February 1883 - 29 May 1922) was a great Russian theatre director who created a new understanding of theatre art and founded the Vakhtangov Theatre. He was a friend and mentor of a famous Russian actor Michael Chekhov. Vakhtangov was born to Armenian parents from Osetia in Vladikavkaz. He was educated at Moscow State University for a short time and then joined the Moscow Art Theatre in 1911 and rose in the ranks, so that by 1920 he was in charge of his own studio.
