OverviewThe book tells the story of Grace, a little girl who grew up during the war years, and the trials of living through this difficult period. She was born into unfortunate circumstances as her mother wasn't married, and she was consequently adopted and brought up away from her real family for eight years. Eventually, she returned to her mother's house but her mother lacked maternal instinct and Grace was treated quite poorly. However, she adored her sister and baby brother and helped to raise them. As time went, on she grew into a young woman and eventually moved in and became engaged to a man named Robbo but Grace is entertaining the idea of a relationship with a handsome young sailor.
