Overview

Our gutsy Lakota heroine resolutely returns to Kansas City where she finds danger and a resounding rift between cultures. Obstacles to her success there include fraudulent businessmen, a dangerous crime boss, and family secrets that cannot be denied. Having delivered family justice to her killer uncle, Raylene Little Moon turns to unraveling her sister's mysterious death. Needing local knowledge and contacts, she seeks assistance from John Murphy, the Union Pacific Railroad detective who recently pursued her onto South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation where he stirred up trouble. John Murphy's job is in peril due to mistakes he made while on the Pine Ridge, but Raylene draws him into her search, her determination and courage piercing his reserve. Though their cultures are vastly different, he soon hungers to know her better. Plus, he needs her help in solving a mystery. The author thanks cultural consultants Danialle Rose, of the Cheyenne River Sioux, and Thomas Ghost Dog, of the Oglala Nation, for their invaluable insights into culture, history, and language; and for Thomas's permission to use his hometown of Manderson, South Dakota, nearby to which his grandfather William Ghost Dog sponsored the first rodeo held on Pine Ridge Reservation land.
