Overview

The U.S. Navy's patrol of the Yangtze River began in 1854 when the USS Susquehanna was sent to China to safeguard increasing American commerce in the region. The late Kemp Tolley, also the author of Cruise of the Lanikai and Yangtze Patrol enjoyed a long naval career before retiring from the U.S. Navy at the rank of Rear Admiral.
