Overview

Based on the latest teaching techniques, Yallā is a comprehensive introduction to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), helping students to acquire fluency and accuracy in the language. It is split into two volumes that support students as they advance through their understanding: the first for beginners, and the second for intermediate learners. The textbook focuses on the four major language skills – reading, listening, writing, and speaking – and emphasizes the development of effective learning strategies. Each chapter includes a wide selection of materials that introduce new vocabulary and grammar structures whilst reinforcing previous material. Communication-oriented activities such as role-playing and interviews enable accurate and productive language use, while writing is presented systematically and reflects real-life communication. Each volume also includes a grammar reference section, which makes assimilation easier by drawing on common points between the student's knowledge of English and of Arabic.

'Yallā is a welcome book for beginning Arabic students. It does a great job of introducing MSA's alphabet letters, sounds and grammar fundamentals, focusing on short texts in Arabic. The material in this textbook sets solid foundations for both MSA and familiarity with Egyptian Arabic. It serves as a cultural resource to both sides of the Mediterranean.' Martin Isleem, Bucknell University 'The book is very up to date. It is a vital, comprehensive and well-structured book that I loved. Its pictures and stories are laid out in a very attractive manner. Because of its logical organization and beautiful design, it is enjoyable to read. Students will be motivated to study from it. I am sure that students will adore it!' Ahmad Karout, The Arabic Department at Brigham Young University 'This textbook will be a valuable asset to Arabic teachers and learners in a variety of educational settings. It takes a thoughtful and innovative approach to teaching the Arabic language using methods that are grounded in current research. The textbook contains a variety of well-organized explanations, exercises and texts aimed at developing learners' skills and abilities in engaging and efficient ways.' Rachel Friedman, University of Calgary 'Yallā is a comprehensive and well-structured textbook that provides a thorough and engaging learning of Arabic. The four major language skills are represented in a captivating and accessible way. Grammar concepts are considered in a clear approach with enjoyable practice exercises, and a particular attention is given to cultural context.
