Writing Inspirations

Overview

This is an illustrated index of inspirations, ideas, and activities to spark thought, conversation, and, ultimately, written work. It is published in book form for teachers who wish to use it as a reference and resource book. However, the material has been designed so that it can be easily photocopied and the copies used to create a set of quick-reference cards or files that can be arranged by activities – what the author likes to call a ""fundex."" The individualized writing topics fit on half a page, ready to be photocopied and added to a Fundex collection of cards for students to choose from. They often have a lively photo or illustration or a piece of virtual realia - maps, ads, forms, articles. The topics are both entertaining and simple enough for students working on their own to understand. The over 700 Fundex tasks involve individual, pair, and small group work. Though primarily for quick writing activities, the tasks also include elements of the writing process: discussion and planning, information gathering, research, and reading. The cards are effective with students of all ages, interests, and skill levels. They are ideal for tutorials, as well as for libraries and learning centers.
