Overview

What happens when everyone involved in a multi-million dollar international shipment of a rare earth mineral decides to cheat and scam the next guy down the line? They end up dead, missing, or in jail. A cargo ship and all its crew are blown out of the water off the coast of Venezuela, leaving only a mangy dog and a scheming vessel's officer floating in a damaged raft. They are picked up by a cruise ship on which Joe Barrett, the international maritime lawyer, and his wife are spending their honeymoon. The incident initiates a worldwide investigation of a dirty mine in northern Brazil to a ruthless company in Luxembourg, from the run- down quarters of a failing steamship company in Iskenderun, to the glass towers of the insurance industry in London City. At the center of the storm is Joe Barrett and his legal team in midtown New York, trying to follow the money and figure out how a large cryptocurrency account ended up inside a dog collar. Author Information

The author has been a practicing maritime lawyer in New York City for over 50 years. Before going to law school, he spent several months at sea as a deckhand on a freighter that traveled between Spain and the East Coast of the US. In the course of handling many marine casualty cases, he has traveled around the world performing investigations and working with organizations like the Comite Maritime International, the Maritime Law Association of the US, and the U.S. State Department. The author is also one of the founders of the International Maritime Law Seminar, which takes place each year in London and Singapore. The author lives in New York City and Centerport, Long Island, with his wife. He is an avid sailor, proficient at art glass, and an admitted amateur painter.
