She moved to the United States in the early 1960s where she received her PhD in comparative literature at Indiana University Bloomington. As well as an award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction, Accad is also a songwriter, composer, and professor. She has taught at a number of universities, including Beirut University College and the University of Illinois, and remains Professor Emeritus of comparative French and Arabic literature, and African and feminist studies.
