OverviewThis book tells the story of Fred Cheshire growing up until that life-changing day of the swimming accident. June 7, 1977: At the age of 32 Fred lay on a hospital bed with tongs in his head, unable to move and stared at the ceiling. His neck was broken and the spinal cord severed. The medical team is quadriplegia. After hearing the diagnosis, he told the doctor, I can't take my son and daughter camping in Prescott this summer. I can't take my Royal Palm Gifted school kids to Colorado now. As a child, living in a lower economic background and never knowing when the family might be moving, Fred learned to adjust for friends and opportunities. From his notes: the skinny, polite but enthusiastic 5th grader . . . in exchange for scrubbing, stocking shelves and carrying out groceries . . . earned 12 & 1/2 cents an hour. With never being able to satisfy his pilot step-father and with his mother constantly worrying about money, Fred found his escape in books and mastering chess. Indianapolis - St. Petersburg - Winter Haven - Haines City - Hialeah - Lake Charles - Harlingen and sometimes staying with grandparents in Plainfield, it was not until they arrived in San Benito that Fred found almost four years of permanency. He also found and lost the girl of his dreams, how to ride a Brahma bull and how to sell used furniture in Spanish. Then with one day's notice he had to leave his books and his Fiat behind for a trip to the unknown. Their funds were down to a small pouch of silver dollars when Mariam drove along Van Buren Street in Phoenix and said, I think we're home. Starting over would be a challenge for both mother and son. Mariam survived the loss of her son by writing his biography. The follow up, There's Nothing I Can't Do, will tell the story of how Fred adjusted to his severe accident and once more found a fulfilling life and happiness.
