World Without End: An Illustrated Guide to the Climate Crisis

Overview

“Sharp, funny, and heart-stoppingly honest.” —Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction “A testament to the power of the graphic novel and a singular work of environmental activism . . . Masterful and unforgettable.” —Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis THE #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER A Next Big Idea Club’s Must-Read of March 2025 • A She Reads Most Anticipated Book of 2025 A rich and colorful French graphic novel that has become a word-of-mouth sensation and transformed the way hundreds of thousands of people think about climate change. There is no green energy. Nor pink, nor black. Nor clean nor dirty, for that matter. In this intelligent, eye-opening, and witty international bestseller, an eminent climate expert takes a graphic novelist on a journey to understand the profound changes that our planet is experiencing. The scientist, Jean-Marc Jancovici, explains the workings of superpowers and history; oil and climate; ecology, economics, and energy flows. He describes, in short, the world we live in today—a world whose future is deeply uncertain. The artist, Christophe Blain, intently listens and draws. As the pair come face to face with global warming, they—along with Mother Nature and a cast of others—create a picture of what the solution to our predicament actually looks like. It’s not just about switching to renewable energy sources. It’s about rethinking everything: our energy supply, our economies, and our whole world. We’re left with a vision of the future in which food, education, housing, transport, and communities—in other words, all of us—come together and, with a few technological fixes, work to create a world without end.

Reviews

THE #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER A Next Big Idea Club's Must-Read of March 2025 - A She Reads Most Anticipated Book of 2025 ""Can a graphic novel save the planet? Perhaps. World Without End is sharp, funny, and heart-stoppingly honest."" --Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction ""This clever, exhaustive breakdown of our cost to the planet is free of dogma and all the better for it . . . Positively encyclopedic in its outlook, this is a book that takes you back, in a good way, to childhood, every dilemma, decision, or future scenario carefully illustrated with a memory-boosting little picture. I agree wholeheartedly with our friends across the Channel. This is vital reading: every maison should have one."" --Rachel Cooke, Observer (""Graphic novel of the month"") ""READ. THIS. BOOK. World Without End is the single most important book on energy of our time."" --Eliza Griswold, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist ""It is big and bold in the style of the other graphic novels that broke out of their niches: Maus . . . Persepolis . . . and Palestine . . . It's witty, charmingly crude . . . persuasive."" --Adam Rutherford, Guardian ""A testament to the power of the graphic novel and a singular work of environmental activism. Through its whip-smart designs, accessible research, and fearless commentary, this book invites readers of all backgrounds to join the climate change conversation--and demands that they feel anything but ambivalence. Masterful and unforgettable."" --Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis ""A frenetic and funny take on global warming . . . no ordinary climate science book . . . when it comes to understanding the crisis we face, boy, is this a powerful book of cartoons."" --Madeleine Cuff, New Scientist ""Hang it in the Louvre . . . Thanks to Blain's skills, World Without End turns out to be a surprisingly good way of conveying in a single frame complicated notions that would take paragraphs to explain in a conventional book . . . Provocative? Maybe. But who says a comic book can't challenge you and make you think as well as make you smile?"" --Air Mail ""When it comes to the climate crisis, most of us know what we think, but we also understand that we don't know enough. In World Without End, Jancovici pulls no punches about how dire things have become, but Blain also keeps humor ever present, and it is welcome. This book, which covers so much material, is extremely readable and enjoyable, and a testament to the talent of the author and artist behind it. They know that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and that while we all want to know more about the current state of things, we need a place to start. For many people, this will be it."" --Kate Beaton, New York Times bestselling author of Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands ""A hugely impressive feat, unfolding as a dialogue between its creators . . . If World Without End can spread its provocations to the Anglophone world, that would be utterly fabulous."" --The Conversation
