OverviewThis course takes a cross-cultural approach to the study of world cultures & geography and world literature. We will go beyond our perspective (etic-world view) to that of the people whose world and culture we will observe (emic-world view). We will discuss the social behavior and norms of each country/region in the world, while considering their great literary works. We will study poems, plays, and/or novels with the assumption that these works represent valid ways in which to interpret culture. The material presented in this course offers many opportunities to explore different cultural assumptions and means of expression through study of culture and literature. Structure, style and themes as well as figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone will be stressed.
