Workplace Spirituality And Its Impact On Work Life Balance

Overview

"Organisations all over the world are facing unparalleled challenges of competition in the context of globalisation. The present wave of outsourcing & relentless pursuit for cost cutting has rendered many organisations without customers & many people without jobs. In the background of all this, perhaps it would be no surprise that world over, political leaders are encouraging protectionism. However, accepting globalisation as reality with its both positive & negative effects, management across countries are finding ways to survive in these competitive times. The present study is proposed to respond to those contemporary challenges i.e. lack of balance in work & life, sapping enthusiasm, lack of loyalty towards organisations, & purposelessness in life. Although it is not claimed that the present study will give a solution to these problems, it could reinforce the already widely discussed idea of workplace spirituality in organisations as a hope to deal with these challenges. Management researchers are still to find the ultimate answers to problems like what really derives satisfaction from a job? What actually motivates employees etc? Although answers were given, explanations were made; however, we still have not arrived at the ultimate. As said by Swami Vivekananda(1893, p. 14) that ends all quest in material science is seeking that ultimate for e.g. the ultimate force in Physics by which all other forces can be derived; the ultimate element in Chemistry through which all other elements can be derived. So, it could be said that even in social sciences, what researchers are seeking is that ""ultimate"" & that ""ultimate"" lies in the realm of spirituality. Further as said by Swami Vivekananda (1896, pp. 1-5) ""It is said of Socrates that one day while lecturing at Athens, he met a Brahmin who had travelled into Greece, and Socrates told the Brahmin that the greatest study for mankind is man. The Brahmin sharply retorted ""How can you know man until you know God?"""
