OverviewA research study looking at the effectiveness of specialist support teams in their work with young people aged 11-16 at imminent risk of family breakdown. This book is about services which aim to prevent the placement of troubled young people in residential or foster care. The provision of a support service at an earlier stage, before problems reach crisis point, may well prevent the escalation of difficulties for many of these young people. Higher numbers of older children enter state care (around 44 per cent of children who start to be looked after each year are aged 10-16) at a correspondingly higher cost of accommodating them. Since the late 1980s, specialist support teams have been established in many local authorities, offering an intensive, short-term preventive service aimed at diverting adolescents from the care system. This book describes the findings of a research study into the effectiveness of these specialist teams and when interventions appear to be helpful. It compares outcomes for young people referred to support teams with others receiving a mainstream social work service. It also explores the reasons why older children and teenagers may come to the brink of placement and the circumstances in which some of them are placed. It explores implications for the development of social work policy and practice with older children and young people.
