WORKING STIFF is a razor-edged murder mystery set in 1970s New York that strips the genre to the bone - then feeds it something greasy at 2 a.m. Following his divorce and his resignation from the police force, ex-cop Frank Leland scrapes by as a private investigator, photographing cheating partners and earning just enough to cover the bills for his run-down bedsit. Bowes ""A dead media professional, a missing suit, and a sex scandal that will test Frank Leland's resolve. Working Stiff is a gripping, fast-paced murder mystery set in 1970s New York... Frank Leland can't mask the addiction that is ruining his life. His fatal flaw is a food addiction, and the way he eats to suppress his overwhelming emotions. I found him infinitely relatable, as was his dry wit and self-deprecating humor... The mystery is solid and filled with twists and turns sharp enough to give you whiplash."" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bill Walker - former Manager, Book Clubs, The McGraw-Hill Companies ""Bill Krieger's Working Stiff drops us straight into the blistering summer of 1977-Son of Sam on the loose, blackouts still haunting the city, the streets simmering with crime and heat. At the center is Frank Leland, an overweight, overworked, and stubbornly persistent private eye trying to scare up clients while nursing the wounds of a busted marriage and a career left behind at the NYPD... What makes it sing isn't just the plot-it's the authenticity."" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Michael West - Private Investigator, UCMJ Investigations ""Great story line and true-to-life action. The last 50+ pages was a mandatory marathon read, couldn't put it down. Great book."" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Linn Random - author, frequent speaker at Sisters in Crime conferences ""I promise you will be breathless until the last page."" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ BAF - Amazon Review ""This is a hot fudge sundae of a book - deliciously absorbing and you can't stop 'til you finish."" Author InformationBILL KRIEGER was born and raised in New York City - not the fancy parts. He grew up in Bronx tenements, where laundry lines hung between windows and his favorite uncle, a city cabbie, was killed on the job. As a teenager, Bill delivered lunches to Wall Street and paperwork to Midtown law offices. Later, he built a career on Madison Avenue, working as a creative director at top advertising agencies. Eventually, Bill left the suits and slogans behind to write mystery fiction- gritty, character-driven stories rooted in the city that raised him. He currently lives with his wife, Arlene, in Northern Virginia -where he's surrounded by books on homicide investigation, literary noir, and the weirdest corners of human behavior.
