OverviewWords Made Flesh contains six essays by the award-winning fiction writer David Jauss, each of which challenges current reigning dogmas about the craft of fiction. As in his previous collection, Alone with All that Could Happen, Jauss takes a descriptive rather than a prescriptive approach to his subjects. Whereas many craft books tell writers what they should do, Words Made Flesh describes what great writers of the past and present have actually done and thus expands our understanding of the vast panorama of valid techniques and strategies available to fiction writers today. Table of ContentsReviewsIf I were in charge of the seating arrangements, I'd reserve a place for David Jauss in the very first row of contemporary American fiction writers. -Wally Lamb [David Jauss's] prose is at once lean and generous, sensual and intelligent, edgy without being judgmental. -Andre Dubus III Written with clarity and compassion and an ability to see several sides of life simultaneously, Black Maps is a moving, impressive, deeply rewarding collection from a very talented writer. -Lorrie Moore David Jauss's work was a huge influence on me as a young writer. -Dan Chaon Nice People is among the best story collections I've ever read. My husband, who has not read it, asked if it were better than Chekhov and I hesitated. I hesitated! -Kelly Cherry [David Jauss's] skill, insight, and artistry . . . have earned him a place among the very best American writers. His talent runs deep. -Clint McCown I have long admired David Jauss's fiction-the tough, yet gentle intelligence in it. -Richard Bausch [David Jauss's] stories have been personal landmarks for as long as I have been writing. -Bret Lott Author InformationDavid Jauss is the author of four collections of short stories, most recently Glossolalia: New & Selected Stories and Nice People: New & Selected Stories II; two collections of poems, You Are Not Here and Improvising Rivers; and a previous craft book, Alone with All That Could Happen: On Writing Fiction (Revised & Expanded Edition).
