Author Information

Jennie Hammett is a lively interdisciplinary artist, very curious about the world and its beauty. She is a composer, author, illustrator and healer. She has had poetry and fiction published in journals and newspapers, for example, ""The Human Touch"" (Anschutz Medical Campus), ""Chico News and Review,"" and ""Paragraph."" Book-length work includes ""New Things! A Love Letter to the World: A year-long journey through food, culture and natural history"", and ""Inventions From the Cutting Room Floor."" Musically, she is particularly focused on chamber music for dance, and also for voice. To this end, she composed and choreographed for Black Phoebe, and award-winning dance company forged with Leigh Kirkconnell. Her opera about Florence Nightingale, ""The Power of Her Wings,"" was a semi-finalist for The American Prize. Her Liederkreis enjoyed its world premiere at Oberlin Conservatory. In her years in San Francisco, she also composed and performed with San Francisco Conservatory alum Michael Trout. She toured Europe twice: once in a rock band (violinist/singer/composer), and again singing sacred works in cathedrals such as Notre Dame and Chartres. Jennie embarked on her study of music when her parents discovered she was composing tunes on her toy piano. She would not leave that thing alone. She also managed to study English Literature and Chinese medicine. She holds a B.A. and M.S.O.M. through California State University, Chico and Meiji College.
