The original publication was designed and written to draw comparisons between the use of wood veneer and laminated plastics in the manufacture of domestic furniture. It discusses in layman's terms the production methods of both from the raw materials. It goes on to describe how they are applied in the fabrication process. Finally, it looks at the wider implications and draws conclusions from their continued use at an ever increasing rate in a worldwide consumer culture.

Author Information

Jim Duggan is a highly trained ex cabinet maker and shopfitter who went through the traditional five year apprenticeship which was the normal route to a fully qualified trade in the 1960s. He followed up this training with several years of advanced courses and is, as a consequence, able to claim the following credentials to his name. City & Guilds National Furnishing Diploma (NFD) Cabinet Making - First Class. City & Guilds - Advanced General Furnishing. City & Guilds - Final - Upholstery. City & Guilds - Full Technological Certificate. Which included the following subjects 1. Cabinet Making. 2. Processes & Materials. 3. History & Structure of the Industry. National Association of Retail Furnishers (N.A.R.F) National Furnishing Diploma (NFD). Which included the following subjects. 1. Furniture One - Upholstery, Beds & Bedding. 2. Furniture Two - General Furniture. 3. Furnishing Fabrics & Soft Furnishing. 4. Interior Decoration. 5. Floorcoverings. 6. Selling & Duties of a Salesman. 7. Shop Floor Display. For good measure he also completed the following. City & Guilds Teacher Training Course - Stage One. AUTHOR'S MESSAGE The contents of this book are in essence a reproduction of a thesis for which he received a 'Distinction'. He wrote it in pursuit of just one of the aforementioned qualifications. For the purposes of current authenticity one or two elements and images have been updated, but otherwise it remains as originally written. The content is still as relevant at the time of publication as it was fifty years ago.
