OverviewMove over, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch with your Venus in Furs (1870), and make way for a raunchier contemporary counterpart. Here is the ultimate sadomasochistic femdom tale. Like fur-clad Venus, women mete out the discipline. Dominant females routinely beat and cajole their males, bending them to their will. It's what they do. Men, lured by beauty, lusting after sex, and fearing further caning, submit supinely. A young man is bewitched by the prominent bosom of a middle-aged Swedish matron in a tweed riding jacket, and signs his life away on a whim, binding himself to her forever. Lady Ingrid Godwin canes her personal slave for no real reason, merely for diversion and exercise, as recommended by her doctor. The slave goes looking for an aloof exotic woman he is drawn to and ends up being restrained, beaten and gang-banged by three of her lesbian friends. He serves tea to a mean-faced Asian girl, who has been playing tennis in white hotpants, and is captivated against his better judgement. Such is the power of femdom. Watch out guys! The spell is virtually inescapable. It takes a slaves' revolt, murder, and concerted countermagic to break it. Young Tan is a dark-skinned orphan from the streets of East London. Through evening classes, he improves himself sufficiently to win a place at Cambridge Polytechnic of Applied Art. In Cambridge, he runs into the son of Lord and Lady Godwin, Dando, who is a student at the university. Learning that Tan faces a bleak future, Dando suggests to him that he enter service at his parents' manor house, in the village of Happing, on the North Norfolk Coast. Tan is interviewed by imperious Lady Ingrid Godwin and, momentarily distracted by her voluptuous figure, fatally signs a lifelong contract of service with her and her husband, Lord Harold. At the age of 25, he becomes the personal slave and chattel of capricious exacting Mistress Ingrid, who can do whatever she likes with him, and does. At Happing Manor, Tan falls in with the Godwins' senior slave, Jack Whatmough. In his mid-forties, this seasoned country man shows the newcomer the ropes. In the atmospheric setting of backwoods coastal Happing, the story portrays Tan and Jack's life with the Godwins, the slaves' escapades and misdemeanours, their punishments in the manor's cellar, study, studio and bedrooms, their comradeship and banter, as well as Jack's home-spun philosophy. Lord Godwin is a rich urbane relatable stockbroker, working in the City of London, and the proud owner of a collection of vintage motorcars, including his prized 1927 Bugatti. His wife is a bored frustrated housewife with little to fill her days except dabble in painting and toy with handsome Tan, exactly half her age. Into this mix comes Harold's exotic girlfriend, foxy Miss Ying-Ying, who starts to visit Happing. First Tan and then Tan's mistress fall under the spell of the austere boyish Asian woman, each trying to monopolise her, despite Harold's prior claim. For Lady Godwin, Ying-Ying becomes a new female lover, whose portrait she cannot paint enough. For Harold, she is his London 'oriental floozie', part-time housekeeper, and office help. For Tan, she is his femme fatale. An explosive climate of three-way jealousy develops. At the manor's annual summer garden party, matters come to a head, but in an unexpected way. Ambiguous Lord Godwin, his wimpish son Dando, and the Godwins' perverse gamekeeper, violently sexually abuse Tan and Jack, after which all three perpetrators die in mysterious circumstances - Harold shot in the eye by a spring gun. At the same time, Lady Godwin suffers a debilitating stroke, rendering her whipping arm powerless. Happing Manor has no master or mistress. Jack becomes the new master de facto. Tan and Ying-Ying seize the opportunity to escape, 'borrow' Harold's Bugatti, and move into his luxury apartment in Knightsbridge, London, where she becomes Tan's new mistress.
