Author Information

Since 2020, after watching the video of the murder of George Floyd, Carol Jacobsen has been using her 50 years spent as a painter to create a series of 100 portraits of Black women who have overcome the barriers of race and gender to achieve their dreams and also give back to their community. Her 34-year career as a tech consultant has enabled her to use skills learned there to spread her message of educating people about these overlooked women via books, videos, and social media. Inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr's ""I have a Dream speech"", where he speaks of a nation where his four young children ""will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character"", she created the series as her way to speak out against racism. Her talk today, Breaking Barriers: Bay Area Women from the Women of Color and Accomplishment series, is about the creation of that series and the Bay Area women who are part of those 100 portraits.
