OverviewWhat role did women of Basque origin play in the Atlantic Revolutions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries? This book shows how Basque women, both in the Basque Country and in America, played a significant role in the warlike, revolutionary and disruptive processes of the period. We cannot forget that several of the heroines of the American independence processes came from Basque families. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, women in the Basque Country also had to face the warlike context of the Napoleonic Wars and the collapse of the Ancien Régime. The book compiles a multitude of female experiences and their performance in difficult times: being victims of war, active subjects in the war conflict, allies or detractors of one or another political cause, etc. In short, this book banishes the traditional secondary role attributed to women within these processes, critically redefining their value. The book also analyses the discourses on femininity and the virile woman developed within the Atlantic framework and the role played by the Basques in the independence of America.
