Overview

This book provides real-world, relevant examples of work completed by women electrical engineers, who still make up only 15% of the field, and the importance of that work to improving lives around the globe. While the content is made up of scientific works, the book also features chapters that describe the journeys taken by individual women in electrical engineering, as they use their degrees and background in various ways to make an impact on the world around them. The book includes significant diversity of perspectives, including examples from a wide range of fields that are touched by electrical engineering. As an important part of the Women in Science and Engineering book series, the work highlights the contribution of women leaders in electrical engineering, inspiring women and men, girls and boys to enter and apply themselves to secure the future in the field.

Author Information

Kaitlyn J. Bunker, Ph.D., P.E., serves as director of the Climate Finance Access Network (CFAN) at Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a global nonprofit organization working to transform the global energy system to secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future for all. In this role, she leads a diverse team that coordinates CFAN, with an aim to unlock access to climate finance at scale in developing countries. She previously led the Islands Energy Program at RMI, a team that partners with islands in the Caribbean to support and accelerate their clean energy transitions. Prior to joining RMI, she earned a Ph.D., an M.S., and a B.S. in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University. Her graduate research focused on microgrids, and optimizing control strategies for distributed renewable resources. She joined RMI in 2014 and is a certified professional engineer in the state of Colorado. Dr. Bunker is a life member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and currently serves on SWE’s board of directors; she received the SWE Distinguished New Engineer award in 2018. She also recently served on the board of directors of the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance (RREAL).
