Overview

The authors give compelling examples of the heroic struggles of women against their exploitation and oppression. The progress towards women's equality has been hard-won, but the capitalist system has been able to absorb, even incorporate many of these gains to its own advantage, as is shown in Yassamine Mather's essays in this book. Today, the unprecedented global humanitarian crisis, with its wars and mass poverty and starvation, has its greatest impact on women and children, and the particular sensibilities of women are essential to any understanding of and action against these atrocities. It is argued here that the problems will continue, even intensify, unless the economic and political system at their root, globalised capital, with its destructive imperatives, is challenged and replaced - a change requiring a social revolution. At the core of this book is the thesis that past conceptions of the class-consciousness essential for such a historical transformation have failed to grasp that besides the purely rational understanding of the necessity of revolution, there must exist motivation inspired by feeling, empathy, anger, fighting ardour. Without this, the solidarity so essential cannot be achieved, and here again, the special sensibilities of women will be indispensable. For this reason, the authors say that women are a 'vast untapped resource' for the social revolution.
