Overview

Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference. -FREDERICK DOUGLASS, 1845 The prophets of old were not easy to listen to because they did not flatter. They did not cajole. They spoke hard words that often chafed and unsettled their listeners. Like the Old Testament prophets, and more recent prophetic voices like Frederick Douglass, Dr. Eric Mason calls the evangelical church to a much-needed reckoning. In a time when many feel confused, complacent, or even angry, he challenges the church to: Be Aware--to understand that the issue of justice is not a black issue, it's a kingdom issue. To learn how the history of racism in America and in the church has tainted our witness to a watching world. Be Redemptive--to grieve and lament what we have lost and to regain our prophetic voice, calling the church to remember our gospel imperative to promote justice and mercy. Be Active--to move beyond polite, safe conversations about reconciliation and begin to set things aright for our soon-coming King, who will be looking for a woke church.

Author Information

John M. Perkins is a sharecropper's son who grew up in New Hebron, Mississippi, amidst dire poverty. Fleeing to California at the age of seventeen after his older brother's murder at the hands of a town marshal, he vowed never to return. After converting to Christianity in 1960, however, he returned to Mendenhall, Mississippi, to share the Gospel of Christ. While in Mississippi, his outspoken nature and support and leadership in civil-rights demonstrations resulted in repeated harassment, beatings, and imprisonment. He was also arrested in 2005 while protesting in Washington, DC, against the government defunding of programs aiding the poor. In Mendenhall, he and his wife founded Voice of Calvary Ministries. In 1982 the Perkins returned to California and lived in Pasadena, where they founded Harambee Christian Family Center in a neighborhood that had one of the highest day-time crime rates in California. The following year, he and his wife, along with a few friends and major supporters, established the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development, Inc. JD Jackson is a theater professor, aspiring stage director, and award-winning audiobook narrator. A classically trained actor, his television and film credits include roles on House, ER, Law & Order, Hack, Sherrybaby, Diary of a City Priest, and Lucky Number Slevin. The recipient of several audiobook awards for narration and an Odyssey Honor for G. Neri's Ghetto Cowboy, JD has also been named one of AudioFile magazine's Best Voices of the Year for 2012 and 2013. Eric Mason is the founder and pastor of Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Yvette, have four children. After more than two decades of gospel ministry, Dr. Mason has become known for his passion to see the glory of Jesus Christ robustly and relevantly engaged in broken cities with the comprehensive gospel. He helps coach and train families to plant churches locally, nationally, and internationally. He is the founder and president of Thriving, an urban resource organization committed to developing leaders for ministry in the urban context, and is the author of the books Woke Church, Manhood Restored, Beat God to the Punch, and Unleashed. He is the recipient of multiple earned degrees, including a BS in psychology from Bowie State University, a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a doctoral degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Ligon Duncan is chancellor, CEO, and John E. Richards Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary. He previously served as the senior minister of the historic First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi, for seventeen years. He is a cofounder of Together for the Gospel, a senior fellow of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and was the president of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals from 2004-2012. Duncan has edited, written, or contributed to numerous books. He and his wife, Anne, have two children and live in Jackson, Mississippi.
