How to explain the mystique and the popularity of The Owl? Apparently they out-sell other animals and birds, in ornament shops, by the hundred. When I ask a group of children: Why is it that we call owls wise? as I have done countless times, they reply: Their eyes - they can see through the night or They can turn their heads completely round ... They wear spectacles ... They know everything ... Merlin had one ... They fly without a sound. I tell them: Perhaps it's to do with all these things but, forgive me, the answer may also lie within the lines of this poem. Afterwards, I shall be giving a hand-written copy away as a prize for the first to answer a riddle. So, make sure you all listen well : Here's a wise owl, for your birthday I think I saw him...
